What is Radiology?

Radiology or diagnostic imaging encompasses a series of tests in which multiple images of parts of the body are taken and studied. It is used for either diagnostic or interventional purposes. It makes use of radiant energy for diagnosis and even treatment of certain diseases. A radiologist’s job is to perform imaging and find out a relevant image which can evaluate the patient’s condition and support his diagnosis. Radiologists are doctors who have specialized training in the field of medical imaging. They are highly trained in the interpretation of these medical imaging. Usually, patients are referred to the radiologists when the diagnosis cannot be done by traditional methods. After a series of imaging tests, radiologists provide reports of their interpretations of the imaging to the referring doctors.

Conditions in which Radiology is used:

  • Arthritis and osteoporosis
  • Blood clots
  • Pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Liver cirrhosis
  • Kidney and bladder stones
  • Breast cancer
  • Fractures
  • Lung infections
  • Description of the procedures:

X-rays: X-rays are types of electromagnetic radiation. They are one of the oldest methods in radiology which is mostly used in detection of fractures. With technological advancements, they have become more powerful and focused for greater applications from imaging cell structures to killing cancer cells.

Ultrasound: In ultrasound, high-frequency sound waves are used to capture live images from the inside of the body. This technology is similar to what is used by sonar and radar. An ultrasound or sonography allows the doctor to examine the internal organs to look for problems with them. Ultrasound doesn’t use radiation and because of this it is a preferred method to view developing fetuses during pregnancy.

2D echo: 2D Echocardiography is a method used in heart investigation which creates images of different sections of the heart. It uses sound vibrations just as ultrasound. It helps in viewing different parts of the heart to find out the damage or blockage within.

Doppler test: Doppler test is also an ultrasound which is used to estimate the blood flow through the blood vessels. It does so by bouncing ultrasound waves off of circulating RBCs. It employs the concept of the Doppler effect to generate imaging of tissues and body fluids by measuring their relative velocity to the probe.
